HARRISBURG FLOODING RESPONSE

Work Schedule May 14– May 18

We need one or two team leaders to take on tasks for Lend A Hand clients this week.

Thursday, May 15 — Three persons, led by Louise Sis, will be painting at 3604 N. 2nd Street.

Saturday, May 19 — We need someone to lead a team of 5-7 people from Faith Presbyterian Church to 3405 N. 2nd Street, Harrisburg to begin hanging studs on a cement block wall and attaching FRP (4 X 8 PVC sheets) to those studs with screws.

We also need someone to install some place-n-press tile in a 5' X 7' bathroom at 100 Millwood Drive, Harrisburg.

RECOVERY WORK WEEK IN LEBANON, PA MAY 13 – 18, 2012

Cost: The cost for the week is $50. This will cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Wednesday evening, we’re planning on going out to a local establishment for dinner, so bring extra money. Thursday evening we’re planning on having a cookout/pool party at Uncle Don and Aunt Maggie’s home. Food and beverage will be provided.

Job Assignments: Jobs will be assigned to us by Don Beatty or his designee. They are likely to range from muck outs to rebuilding.

Work Day: Wakeup will be at 6:30 AM followed by breakfast. We will make our bagged lunches. The work day is expected to begin at 8:00 AM and should end by 5:00 PM daily. After showers and dinner we will have a short devotion followed by a sharing time. After that there is free time with lights out and quiet time at 10 PM.

Bedding: A sleeping bag may be taken, however, sheets and a light blanket should suffice. We will be sleeping on small bunk beds. Bring you own pillow. We will shower at the Lebanon YWCA.

Some helpful suggestions, ideas and thoughts from prior volunteers. Since we’ll be doing lots of dirty work, bring work clothes and sturdy shoes/sneakers. Dressy clothes are not necessary. You might want to bring a bathing suit for the pool party, assuming the water is warm enough.Bring towels and personal toiletries. Work assignments will be of the re-construction/demolition type. We will prepare our own brown bag lunches to take to our work site. Water will be supplied at all job sites.

Tools: Bring your own hand tools(if you own some) and /or power tools that you love to use. Be sure to put your name on all your tools using indelible ink.

Home-Away-from-home: We will be staying at the Berg Haus, run by Hillside Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Directions: From Elizabethtown, Hershey, Harrisburg and points west, take US route 422 east, at the intersection of route 422 and North Mill St. (there’s a Giant on the left) turn left at the light. The Berg Haus (a large A-Frame) is approximately 1 mile up the hill on the left.
From Reading and points east, take US Route 422 west. After passing through Lebanon, continue to the intersection of North Mill St. and route 422 in Cleona. Turn right at the light, the Giant is on your right. The Berg Haus (a large A-Frame) is approximately 1 mile up the hill on the left.

WEEKEND WORK TRIPS TO WYOMING, PA

With the Hurricane Irene and Lee work winding down in the Tri-County area, Lend A Hand has decided to help the people of Northeastern Pa recover from the flooding from those hurricanes. They are still mucking out homes and re-building others. We have decided to do two weekend trips to Wyoming, PA - leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday. A 2 to 2 1/2 hour trip each way is expected.

We will be sleeping on cots, showering at the YWCA, and preparing our own meals from food supplied by PDA. We will be staying at a PDA camp at a cost of $20 per day. The type of transportation used will be determined later.

Our first weekend will take place June 15 – 17, and the second one will be July 13 – 15. Volunteers will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Camp capacity is 30 volunteers, so register early. If we go by van, the cost will be $75 per volunteer. I will be contacting our bus company to see what a bus would cost. I will provide that figure as soon as possible.
